Be wary of any customizations
with WH. In our experience, the sub-contractors either weren’t given direction
from WH or “forgot” about the customizations and completed their work with the
standard options.
The
first example was our fireplace chase that was specifically noted in our
contract that it was to be 2x6 construction; they framed the chase with 2x4
construction. Once corrected, this caused the inside of our chase to be smaller
than normal.
The
second example was the Greek return on the front of our garage which was built
with their standard layout rather than the smaller return that was specifically
noted in our contract and printed on the prints. This caused the completion of
our roof to be delayed several weeks.
The
third example is for our dining room layout and columns. Even though they
attached a picture, they didn't build to specifications and our field manager
was the one to fix them. They are still off...but we gave up. It is better than
it was and won't bother us as much.
The
fourth example is our ceiling...luckily only in the garage. As of yesterday,
the drywall finishers completed a stomp finish on our garage ceiling
(thankfully not the whole house) instead of the stomp/knockdown that was stated
in our contract. We HATE the look of the stomp, so we paid extra to have
the "stomp knock" which was as close as we could get to knockdown
ceilings without dropping another crazy sum of money. Our field manager said he didn't know what "stomp knock" was, so we told him it was in the Cygnet office and to call Kristi or Heidi with questions.
We
spent three days in Pre-construction meetings to make sure all of this was IN
WRITING. These mistakes and disappointments are starting to wear on us. If WE
have to sit in meetings making sure everything is written correctly, why have
the crews made mistakes on nearly all of our customizations? If Wayne Homes wants to call themselves a custom builder, they need to better address ANYTHING custom with the crews.
The last item on our "customized" list is our sink, so hopefully we/they can at least get THAT right.
